Maurice Kahn, originally from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, settled in Montgomery in 1871 and founded Schloss and Kahn Grocery Company. He had 11 children, several of whom continued in the busi­ness. David Kahn, one of his sons, and Mau­rice Kahn, one of his grandsons, continued as officers and helped build the organization into the 35th largest wholesale food distribu­tor in America until they sold out to Sara Lee in the late 1980s.

All of these gentlemen were very active in all aspects of Montgomery's business and civic community. Pictured below are two of the family homes.
